Self Build on a Shoestring, Competition

About:

‘SHELL’ was our competition winning entry for the NaCSBA/Grand Design’s ‘Self Build on a Shoestring’ competition in 2014, on which we collaborated with custom build specialists, Naked House, Circle Housing and Potter Raper.

The brief was to design a development for a city site of 20 homes (with one, two and three bedrooms) that can be built for less than £75,000 each. Our solution – called SHELL – provided a professionally built, highly-insulated timber framed ‘envelope’ that individual self builders can then adapt and complete themselves. The basic SHELL is made using structurally insulated timber panels factory manufactured and installed together on site by a contractor. Once the SHELL has been built the occupiers can complete their homes to their preferred layout and design. We calculated that the average construction cost of each home built according to this plan could be just £70,076 (plus the cost of the land).
