Gascoigne East wins Housing Design Award

We are thrilled to have won a 'Project Award' at the Housing Design Awards, for Gascoigne East. The winners were announced on 13th July 2015, at a ceremony at the Saw Swee Hock Centre, in London.

Gascoigne East, for East Thames Group and the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, is the first phase of development of a 1,575 dwelling masterplan by Allies & Morrison. It will see the creation of a community of 421 new homes, a new medical centre and integrated commercial premises, and will be completed in 2018.

The design has been driven by a holistic approach to create intimate communities on a grand scale, carefully integrating the urban planning, architecture and landscape. A unifying concept underpins the design, derived from the site’s history as a jute spinning mill in Victorian times. The concept of weaving has been explored at different scales to define three distinct neighbourhoods - East Edge, Central Street and the Green Route.

The four main buildings are conceived as courtyards enclosing first-floor shared landscaped gardens with car parking below, allowing for large dual aspect, inventively-designed maisonettes to line the streets. There are large landscaped areas at the heart of the scheme providing public space and a children’s play area.
