Centenary Square, Birmingham

These proposals for Centenary Square create a mix of open spaces for play, nature, education, health, arts and culture to transform this part of Birmingham and set a new standard for major urban public spaces in the UK.

The concept seeks to make the area's industrial heritage visible through a brass seam along the edge of the former Gibson's dock, which also creates a physical connection running through the square, enhancing the surrounding buildings as well as the relationship with the wider Birmingham hinterland. The sequence of spaces provides a café hub and a series of intimate outdoor rooms with a large flexible open area for performance, markets and programmed events.
