We were successful at another planning committee last night as the Braganza Street application was given consent (within a succinct six minutes!) by LB Southwark. Our Landscape studio has been working since late 2015 with Adam Khan Architects on this infill site close to Kennington Underground station.
The proposals see two sites transformed into a new community of 33 new homes with 428m2 of workspace on behalf of Southwark's regeneration team. Landscape proposals include a planted entrance route from Braganza Street leading to a granite-paved square with a specimen tree. Precast concrete elements frame the edges of a mews-style courtyard and provide defensive space for residents’ plant pots whilst linking to the materials of the new facades.
Sarah’s playful concept of ‘escape the menagerie’ for the courtyard tells a story of zoo animals which used to be homed within the nearby Surrey Zoological Gardens (19th century illustration below), now Pasley Park. The project is linked to the Manor Place scheme by Benedetti Architects which was also approved, providing affordable and wheelchair accessible homes over the two developments.
