We would highly recommend reading the London School of Economics and LSE Cities report 'Living in a denser London: how residents see their homes' which seeks to understand resident experiences of life in high density housing.
The research shows that high density living is not inherently bad or unpopular, however, the greater the density, the more important it is to get other factors (including design, amenity, location, community) right. This makes intuitive sense, but it is interesting to see it evidenced across 14 schemes in London.
