Gascoigne East started on site in early 2016 after an accelerated period of technical design development for two of the buildings. Both of these buildings have now been handed over and residents have begun to move in to their new homes. The remaining buildings, which are part of the second phase of construction, are well on their way and due for completion shortly. The final building in the scheme is on schedule for completion at the beginning of 2019.
Throughout, we have taken an important aspect of the area’s history as the driving concept behind the design. The site was formerly home to a jute spinning mill in the Victorian era, and so we used 'weaving' to define the character of distinct neighbourhoods across the estate, such as with the balconies above. In addition, we have opened up the site by introducing a permeable network of streets into, from and through the development, located in LB Barking & Dagenham. This network is further enhanced and clarified by a series of public open spaces.
