Urbanistas

Yesterday, Urbanistas, a women-led group concerned about the future of our cities, held one of their sessions in our office. They organise events for women to share their ideas and get feedback, support and knowledge from other members.

Last night we covered four very different topics. Emma Shaw, co-founder of Library of Things, explained the project which creates a community to share and borrow objects, and asked us about how this could grow toward north east London. Next, we presented the various methods of consultation we use, which opened up a discussion about how well implemented the results of consultation are, and if consultation should happen in earlier stages of a project. Sasha Gordon, Senior Consultant from Quod, presented evidence on how densification in cities is affecting school size and facilities. To finish, Jane Briginshaw and Amy Simmons, both of Jane Briginshaw Associates, outlined a project they want to start about helping people to speak in public. They think a lot of young people's talent is getting lost due to a lack of skills when presenting ideas.

Overall, the evening was very interesting and challenging. We heard opinions and experiences from people with different backgrounds and interests, but always with a common goal; to make cities better for everyone.
