Li and I attended the London Construction Awards Ceremony on Friday night, and we were delighted to win 'Best Regeneration Project' for the Redbrick Estate in Islington.
We won the scheme back in 2013 following a limited competition involving a resident vote on the entries. Since then we have been working closely with the residents, the Tenants Management Organisation, and Islington Council to stitch together new social housing with the existing across the estate, alongside a new community centre and shops facing onto Old Street.
The project also involved transformative landscape improvements throughout the entire neighbourhood, including the creation of a new, planted communal space for residents and substantial ecological enhancements. In addition, the Soapbox Youth Centre has been completed for local young people, and is now located with a new shop window on Old Street itself.
It has been a fantastic effort by many members of the practice over many years, so a big thank you to you all. Huge congratulations to LB Islington, who have championed high quality design at every step of the way, and to all the Redbrick Estate residents who have been so engaged and involved throughout.
