This redevelopment of the Redbrick Estate in Old Street provides 55 homes, new community facilities and retail space, and significant improvements to the communal outdoor spaces and parking areas as part of Islington’s council home building programme. Our brief was to examine ways we could improve the environment for existing residents, whilst offering much needed new homes for local people. The proposals involved the demolition of the existing garages and retail space, which have been re-provided alongside a new larger community centre and three new residential buildings.
The upgraded external spaces and courtyards create a more welcoming and engaging place for estate residents - our team worked very closely with residents to understand their needs and aspirations for these spaces. The new garden square complements the existing courtyards, whilst new informal play spaces within the estate to provide safe play opportunities for children. Pedestrian routes through the estate have been improved, with new paving and planting used to define more private areas in front of ground floor homes.
