London Borough of Southwark earmarked Bermondsey Spa for regeneration when public transport improvements were announced for the area. We reworked the Council’s original masterplan to better integrate the site within its surroundings and provide new high-quality homes, all the while respecting the scale and grain of this historic part of London.
We began by identifying key destinations surrounding the site before looking at ways to create connections between them. Many of our interventions have re-established the historic street network, which had evolved and disintegrated over time. Our medium-rise, high-density approach has created a distinct urban neighbourhood. Buildings have tight footprints with central courtyards, interconnected by new and improved streets and public squares. In addition to 650 new, mixed-tenure homes, there is a range of extra facilities provided; from shops and cafés to GP surgeries and play spaces.
